History of First Monday Trade Days
In the early days of Canton, Courthouse Square was the location where, on the first Monday of the month, a circuit judge stopped to hold court. Because so many residents from Van Zandt and the surrounding counties came to settle disputes or simply watch the proceedings, many people brought goods to trade or sell. For nearly 100 years, livestock was the most popular trade in Canton.
In 1965, the Courthouse Square could no longer hold all the traders that came to the First Monday Trade Day and so First Monday Park was purchased two blocks away. First Monday Park is sprawled across six acres of land and was able to accommodate the influx of people attending the monthly event.
